The Crisis Nursery

The Ministry of Hope was established in 1999 by Malawians as a local, community-based response for meeting the needs of the growing number of children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic.

Over 200 orphans were registered when the Ministry started, and this has now grown to several thousand. Today, Ministry of Hope sponsors feeding centres, education programs, a crisis nursery and international volunteer efforts through a community-based approach.

In the course of providing for these many needy children, it became apparent that caring for the very youngest ones is simply beyond the means and ability of the volunteer staff at the community centres and it is beyond the ability of hospital staff to cope as well. Abandoned babies and severely malnourished children simply perish.

The Crisis Nurseries program is a response to the rising tide of orphaned, abandoned and HIV positive babies in Malawi. The infants are cared for during their crisis period while arrangements are made to place them with relatives or adoptive families. The Crisis Nurseries program is also cooperating with the Raising Malawi project, founded by Madonna, in their mission to offer lasting solutions for the orphans of that very poor country. This collaboration is sending volunteers to provide direct physical support, including assistance with food, medical care and education.
